In an internal memo released on the 10th of October 2023, from the office of the Registrar of Benue State University, it stated that a high rate of carryover has been recorded during the 2022/2023 examinations.
The 310th meeting of Senate held on Thursday, 28th September considered the report of the 71st, 72nd, 73rd meetings of Senate Business Committee and observed that there were massive failure rates at semester examinations across different faculties. Senate however noted the information that the total number of candidates with carryovers/fails included even the good students who might have mistakenly carried over a course or failed an elective.
The senate also noted the information that in addition to other factors identified as its earlier meetings, the unfriendly lecturer- learner relationships was mostly responsible for the massive failure in the university.
Furthermore, consequent upon the above and in order to reduce the failure rates, the senate reiterated that:The summer semester programs for carryover students should be implemented ,
The 75% attendance to lectures should be re-enforced
The Deputy Vice Chancellor ( Academics) and Director, Academic Planning and Quality Assurance in conjunction with Faculty of Education should organize a capacity building workshop that would address the identified issues relating to the massive failure at examinations with the past Vice-Chancellor of the university also as resource persons
At the time of the release of this memo a reasonable amount of looking into was taken and the decision of the senate on the above subject was conveyed to the office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor for necessary action to be taken.
